8.5 Closing Remarks

Through more than 30 years of biomanufacturing, chromatographic separations have been a core process step in almost every industrial manufacturing process. Although the dramatic increase in process productivity has triggered many discussions about the ability of chromatography to keep step with productivity demands, there is very little evidence of chromatography losing its role as a core element of manufacturing. We predict that protein chromatography models will become an important part of process development and process control in the future. Today’s processes are still dominated by empirical approaches to development and control, but we see already today an important role of models in scale‐up and long‐term robustness of industrial protein chromatography. Our contribution outlined four cases of using modeling approaches to strengthen scale‐up and operation of protein chromatography in an attempt to demonstrate that the maturation of biomanufacturing can and should include modeling as one tool to increase predictability and robustness.
